MEMORY TRICKS—UPSC INDIAN HISTORY : DALHOUSIE

Posted on July 18, 2025July 29, 2025 Puru By Puru No Comments on MEMORY TRICKS—UPSC INDIAN HISTORY : DALHOUSIE

Memory Tricks to Remember UPSC Indian History topic- Gov Gen Dalhousie:

(This simple UPSC memory trick was originally published in our earlier website, psctricks.com)

The fundamental principle of any memory trick is to link the new knowledge you want to learn to something that you already know. It is so simple. This is known as the association method. In the following memory trick, I have used this method. We are not familiar with General Dalhousie, but we can split the word into Dal + House, which are familiar to us. Now link Dalhousie and Dal+House and create a story. To create the story, you should first prepare the details about all the things you need to memorize. For example, all that Dalhousie did during his time like Railway, the postal service, the Hindu Marriage Act etc. And then create a story from this.

NOW ENJOY LEARNING THIS UPSC INDIAN HISTORY MEMORY TRICK!!!

Let us take DALHOUSIE….

We have not seen him !!!!!!!

We don’t know how he looked like, AND WE DON’T CARE EITHER….

So what can be done is to take the name and make it FUNNY.

DALHOUSIE =  DAL + HOUSIE = DAL + HOUSE

Now, imagine a house made of DAL (pulses). Is it possible? Well, no. But then, if you make ODD stories, your mind remembers well.

You need not imagine a huge house…

Just draw a house like the one we used to do during our childhood days…

             X

      X           X

    l                  I
    l      [   ]      l

Now imagine that instead of the ‘X’ AND ‘l’ used above, it is made of DAL (pulse!!)….

This is our DAL HOUSE OR DALHOUSIE!!!

NOW MAKE A STORY………..Imagination is the key

Imagine yourself going to the school holiday time and you are making a project. It is a DAL HOUSE. You have made a Dal house on a thermocol sheet. On the left side of the roof, you place a TOY TRAIN, and on the right side of the roof, your brother places a TOY POST BOX.

While playing, you move the train from the left side of the roof to the right side of the roof and so hit the POST BOX, which falls down. Your brother starts crying.

All of a sudden, the doors of your DAL HOUSE open and a small white ENGLISH MAN comes out and claps his hands. Suddenly, many small English soldiers came and brought with them many HINDU BRIDES AND BRIDEGROOMS who were about to get married in a temple. Now the Englishman shouts,” I will conduct the HINDU MARRIAGE instead of the HINDU PRIEST. People become worried and cry for help.

Then there comes Jhansi ki rani …Laxmi Bhai with her sword… She ties the Englishman, goes inside the house, and captures his wife, who is a DOCTOR with a body full of LIPSTICK marks. Rani puts both of them in a huge WOODEN DABBA (BOX) and dispatches them off to SHIMLA, where the weather was too cold and it was snowing.

She makes the Englishman write CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS in the open ground at SHIMLA again to get a new job.

The door of the DAL HOUSE closes.

HOW IS THE STORY??? YOU MAY THINK IT IS CRAZY………ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ‘DON’T THINK ANYTHING LOGICALLY’. JUST TRY TO IMAGINE THE STORY….

  1. DAL HOUSE
  2. TRAIN (left roof)
  3. POST BOX (right roof)
  4. HINDU BRIDE, GROOM, PRIEST, MARRIAGE
  5. RANI LAXMIBHAI
  6. DOCTOR LIPSTICK
  7. WOODEN DABBA..DESPATCH……..SHIMLA
  8. CIVIL SERVICE EXAMS

NOW LEARN THESE EVENTS ASSOCIATED WITH DALHOUSIE ( INDIAN GOVERNOR-GENERAL)

1. First Railway Line – 1853

2. Introduced the Postal System

3. The Hindu Marriage act passed

4. Introduced policy of Doctrine of Lapse

5. Woods despatch introduced

6. Made shimla the summer capital

7. Civil service exams started. (Note: It is only the Civil Service exam and not Civil Service.)

Now, test your memory power. You will be surprised by the results…. Yes, you can answer all the following questions with help of the above story….

  1. Who introduced railways in India?
  2. Which governor-general introduced the postal system?
  3. The Hindu Marriage Act was passed by which governor-general?
  4. Who introduced the policy of the Doctrine of Lapse by which Rani Laxmibhai lost her kingdom?
  5. Woods Despatch was introduced by whom?
  6. Who made SHIMLA the summer capital?
  7. Who introduced the CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS?

EVERYTHING WAS DONE BY OUR DAL HOUSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
