I came to know about the inspiring story of Olympic gold medalist Matthias Steiner from a motivational article, which reinforced my belief in the ‘power of a strong ‘why’, or purpose. In my motivational book to be published soon, the first step among the ‘7 Unstoppable Steps to unbelievable success’ is, of course, the power of a strong ‘why.’ From my own experiences and after observing the huge success of great personalities, I am convinced that a very strong purpose or ‘why’ is the first and foremost element in driving someone to unbelievable achievements.
Story of Mattias Steiner
Now, coming to the hero of this story, Matthias Steiner was born on August 25, 1982, in Vienna, Austria. From a young age, he showed great promise in weightlifting. By his early 20s, he was representing Austria on the international stage. But life had other plans.
In 2004, Matthias met Susann, a young German woman who would become the love of his life. Their relationship blossomed quickly. By 2005, he moved to Germany to be with her and to compete under the German flag.
But just as everything seemed to be coming together, tragedy struck. In July 2007—just a year before the Beijing Olympics—Susann died in a car accident. She was only 28. Steiner was shattered. The person who had supported his dream, stood by him, and motivated him was gone.
In such devastating situations, many would have walked away. But not Matthias.
At her grave of his wife, he made a sacred vow: “I will win Olympic gold in your memory. I will not quit.”
That promise became his fuel. That purpose became his power.
Winning a gold medal in the Beijing Olympics 2008
At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Matthias Steiner competed in the over 105kg weightlifting category. He was not the favorite to win. But he had a promise to be fulfilled.
In his final lift, he hoisted an incredible 258 kg in the clean and jerk, bringing his total to 461 kg, enough to secure the gold medal.
As the national anthem played, Matthias stood on the podium, tears streaming down his face. Then he did something unforgettable: he pulled out a photo of Susann, held it in his trembling hands, and raised it to the sky.
That image went viral and was widely circulated around the world.
It wasn’t just a story of victory—it was a story of love, pain, and the raw, unstoppable power of purpose.
What We Can Learn From Matthias Steiner
Matthias Steiner’s story teaches us more than any textbook or coaching manual ever could. The following three important lessons are to be learned from his story:
- Purpose is more powerful than pain. When your ‘why’ is strong enough, nothing can stop you from achieving your dream goals.
- Love can drive greatness. Steiner didn’t lift for fame—he lifted for a promise made to someone he loved.
- You don’t need to be the favorite. You just need to be the most determined to achieve a goal.
Final Thought
In the world of sports, we often hear tales of discipline, grit, and training. But few stories touch the heart like that of Matthias Steiner—the man who transformed grief into gold by holding on to one powerful thing: purpose.
Whether you’re preparing for a competitive exam, chasing a dream, or battling your inner fears, remember this:
Find your purpose. Make your promise. And then lift, no matter how heavy life gets.
Because when you move with purpose, you become unstoppable.
