21 Life-Changing Lessons I learned from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Posted on August 13, 2025August 15, 2025 Puru By Puru No Comments on 21 Life-Changing Lessons I learned from The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Earl Nightingale was a world-renowned motivational speaker, radio personality, and pioneer of personal development. He inspired millions of people with his deep voice and powerful messages about mindset, success, and self-belief.

Earl Nightingale, a U.S. Marine and radio broadcaster, gained international fame with his 1956 recording, “The Strangest Secret,” widely credited as the first spoken-word personal development recording to sell over a million copies. His teachings laid the foundation for modern self-help and continue to influence thought leaders like Tony Robbins, Bob Proctor, and Brian Tracy.

His recordings are now freely available on the YouTube channel, and I would advise you to hear the ‘Strangest Secret’ daily, at least for a month, and later whenever you feel demotivated.

Surprisingly, every time you listen to the talk, you will feel as if you are learning something new. Upon reflection, I realized that it was due to the state of my mind while listening to the talk. You may feel highly motivated, get a new drive to move forward, find new hope, learn a new technique to achieve goals, etc., based on the state of your mind while listening.

It is also advisable to note down the ideas or useful thoughts you get in a notebook in order to refer to them later.

Now, let us move to the life lessons:

  1. We become what we think about.
  2. Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal.
  3. People conform, not because they choose to, but because they don’t know how to think.
  4. Only 5% of people ever achieve real success.
  5. Your mind is like a field: plant wheat or poison—it doesn’t care.
  6. You must take control of your thoughts.
  7. Set a definite goal.
  8. Act as though it were impossible to fail.
  9. Think about your goal every day.
  10. Work and service are the price of success.
  11. You’re where you are because of your own decisions.
  12. Your rewards are in direct proportion to your service.
  13. Goals give your life direction.
  14. Failure is not caused by circumstances but by a lack of direction.
  15. Your attitude determines your future.
  16. You are always free to choose your thoughts.
  17. Guard your mind like a fortress.
  18. You must pay the price in advance.
  19. Persistence is more important than talent.
  20. Start now. Don’t wait.
  21. You already have everything you need to succeed.

To summarize “The Strangest Secret:

“We become what we think about.”

This is the central idea and foundation of success and failure. According to Nightingale, most people live reactively, conforming to societal norms without setting clear goals or thinking for themselves. Only a small percentage, say 5%, ever achieve true success because they define what they want and pursue it intentionally.

According to Earl Nightingale, success is not about luck or talent—it’s the progressive realization of a worthy goal. If you have a clear goal and take daily action toward it, you’re already successful.

Your thoughts, beliefs, and attitude are the seeds that shape your reality.

He emphasizes the power of:

  1. Definite goals
  2. Daily focus
  3. Positive thinking
  4. Persistence
  5. Taking responsibility

Ultimately, The Strangest Secret is a call to think deliberately, guard your mind, and take control of your life. By changing your thoughts, you change your outcomes.

All the best…
