‘You Can Win’ Changed My Life -Thank You, Shiv Khera

Posted on September 13, 2025September 13, 2025 Puru By Puru 2 Comments on ‘You Can Win’ Changed My Life -Thank You, Shiv Khera

Today, while I was deeply immersed in writing for my book, I suddenly remembered Shiv Khera and his book ‘You Can Win.’ I don’t know why the word ‘shiv’ took me to some kind of nostalgic thoughts, which made me pick that book again after a very long time.

I bought ‘You Can Win’ during my training days long ago and used to devour the content secretly. There was a danger that my fellow batchmates would discover the book and, as usual, make fun of me for reading motivational and self-help books. Some guys used to comment like ‘Ye dekho IAS officer padh raha hai, usko disturb mat karo,’ and these comments demoralized me a lot.

I was very sensitive those days and feared that those negative remarks would go deep inside my subconscious mind and my mind would start believing that I am incapable of achieving big goals.

I hid the book under my bed and used to read whenever I found myself alone. Today, when I took that book in my hands again, it took me back to those old days, and all those painful memories came back. But I am so happy and proud now that I have achieved my dream goal and also could move away from those belittling people who never believed in their own abilities and did not allow anyone to achieve their dreams, either.

When I read the book today, I was astonished to find that I still remember every piece of advice given in the book. The book was like a bible for me then. I used to note down all motivational points, and I strongly believed that this book would definitely help me achieve my dream goal in the future. At the end of every chapter, there were a few exercises, and I used to do them and also practice what was said there.

I also clearly remember all the examples and anecdotes given in the lessons, even after so many years. While reading those again today, I felt an overwhelming joy or happiness inside. I should thank God Almighty for turning me towards a self-help book like this, which had a profound effect on me.

Shiv Khera gave many insights on the following topics:

  1. Importance of attitude
  2. Success
  3. Motivation
  4. Self-Esteem
  5. Interpersonal skills
  6. Subconscious mind and habits
  7. Goal setting
  8. Values and vision

I had a secret journal with me wherein I used to note down my own progress in these subjects mentioned above.

Today, when I look back and reflect upon the reasons for my own goal achievement (becoming a state civil servant), I find that one of the major reasons was my strong belief that whatever advice given in self-help books like ‘You Can Win’ is true and unquestionably correct. I just followed the advice given in the self-help books and over a period of time acquired necessary skills, attitudes, habits, techniques etc, which ultimately helped me in cracking one of the toughest state civil service exams.

I thank Mr. Shiv Khera from the bottom of my heart for guiding me through his book and helping me reach my dream goal.
